Better late than never to review a great new restaurant find. A few Sunday’s back I decided it was time for a little field trip to “Curry Hill” for an Indian brunch. And not just any Indian food - South Indian dosas, one of my favorite new food discoveries. For the record, I have always been one to say I disliked Indian food as a general category, but my introduction to South Indian food has been rapidly changing that perspective.

A quick online search seemed to indicate Saravana Bhavan on 26th and Lexington was the place to go, so off we went. There we ordered a channa matura and a ghee masala dosa to share. They only serve the channa matura on the weekends and is a large fried fluffy bread unlike anything I’ve had elsewhere. The ghee masala dosa was classic and well flavored, with the potato filling I have learned to love. While the neighborhood is full of many Indian restaurants, many of whom I am sure serve excellent dosas, I recommend Saravana Bhavan to anyone looking for an introduction to dosas in a comfortable environment.

The rain finally caught up with us just as we left our dosa brunch with a full summer thunderstorm. Luckily for us, the Armory building has a great covered staircase facing Lexington. Above is my one picture for the day, enjoying a beautiful rainy day and the joy of having an iPhone to play with.
