My Sunday started a bit different than usual this week: earlier, with an 8am start, and more athletic, with a day full of kayaking on the East River. I was excited to join Charlie O’Donnell and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse crew for a day of volunteering. While I did spend some time in a kayak - and have the sore shoulders to prove it - we were primarily stationed on the beach at Main Street, moving people in and out of boats. Overall I estimate 150-200 people went for a paddle on the East River yesterday - all for free, including many who had never been in a kayak before. It was a great day, which ended in a huge appetite and even bigger sunburns.

After pizza and a nap, I found myself
a) still hungry
b) still sunburned
So I thought it was a perfect time for a lobster roll. I previously reviewed Luke’s Lobster and the craving was back with a vengeance, so it seemed a good time to introduce Scott to their delicious rolls. Glowing with sunburn, we saddled up to the counter for two Schooner Combos, 4 crab claws, and their delicious Maine Root sodas. I noticed they added a sign on the register since my last visit listing “today’s catch” source - this batch being from Beals Island. The lobster was as good as I remembered - fresh and pleasantly un-masked by mayo. A perfect quick dinner choice.

After dinner, we were still hungry and started a search for dessert. Our walk home “happened” to be by Sundaes & Cones - one of my favorite East Village ice cream shops. After sampling a few choices Scott got a scoop of mint chocolate chip, and I decided I just couldn’t find quite what I was looking for.
Luckily for me, I only had to make it a few more blocks to find exactly what I was craving - the Kelvin Slush Truck. Launched at the end of July, the slush truck has been getting lots of great press. They tend to park around the Village, so I have walked by a few times but always when late to be somewhere or very full. Last night I decided to give it a try. I selected a ginger base with a mixed berry mix-in. The ginger is a refreshing flavor, with a major kick - especially before the berry fully blending to sweeten it up. The slushy was the perfect way to end a long day - I look forward to see what Alex Rein (a fellow Penn grad I might add) comes up with next.
