The Artsicle Blog: What Your Startup Can Learn... →
artsicle:
Founding a business means I’m always looking for good ideas - even while on vacation at the Magical Kingdom. Last week I saw how much we can all learn from Disney when it comes to customer service and exceeding expectations to delight users at every turn. Here are a few of my favorite lessons…

Terrific Thai? Here Goes Nothing
Last night I should have been out on the town. The plan was dinner at one of Danny Meyer’s restaurants, such as Union Square Cafe, to celebrate my dad (*cough*and his wallet*) being in town. But alas, fine dining will have to wait. Instead, I cook.
As I’ve mentioned, I don’t cook often. I certainly don’t cook anything not found in one of the Giada de Laurentiis’ or...

What to cook today? Project Food Blog - Round 2!
First, a huge thank you to everyone who read my post on Hill Country Chicken and took the time to vote. It is much appreciated.
But now for the scary part. I advanced to round 2 (woohoo!), which means I have to cook for the next challenge. As I mentioned in my last post, the kitchen is not my natural habitat. Restaurants yes, kitchen not so much. I had a weekend full of dining out plans,...

Review: Hill Country Chicken, ie. Why I Blog
I confess, I went to Hill Country Chicken on opening night. Not to see the press and celebrities (there were none, save for Michael White of Marea who is a celeb in my book). Nor for the right to be the first to post a review, because clearly I’m a few days delayed there as well. But instead, because I could not wait one more day to try fried chicken rumored to be as good as what I grew up...

Rainy Sunday = Delicious Dosas!
Better late than never to review a great new restaurant find. A few Sunday’s back I decided it was time for a little field trip to “Curry Hill” for an Indian brunch. And not just any Indian food - South Indian dosas, one of my favorite new food discoveries. For the record, I have always been one to say I disliked Indian food as a general category, but my introduction to South...

New Opening: Eataly
On an evening walk (ok, lets be honest - on my way home from Shake Shack) I happened past Eataly, which opened this afternoon. I decided to brave the line of roughly 30 waiting outside for a chance to look around. I can only imagine the crowds when the real attraction opens - the rooftop beergarden. I must say the place is generally speaking magnificent, with more colors and smells then my...

Sunday Fun Day & Lobster Rolls for Lobster People
My Sunday started a bit different than usual this week: earlier, with an 8am start, and more athletic, with a day full of kayaking on the East River. I was excited to join Charlie O’Donnell and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse crew for a day of volunteering. While I did spend some time in a kayak - and have the sore shoulders to prove it - we were primarily stationed on the beach at Main...

Review: Dim Sum Go Go
Last night I ventured to Chinatown for dim sum for the first time in a couple of years. I’ve been craving a revisit to Dim Sum Go Go, which I first stumbled across on a weekend visit to the city in 2007 while waiting for the Chinatown Bus back to Philadelphia. I was pleasantly surprised then, and even more so now that I have more dim sum experiences to compare to.
We started with a dish...

Review: Luke's Lobster
A recent summer afternoon brought a quick “jail break” with my colleague Wendy to Luke’s Lobster in the East Village. Luke’s, which opened in the Fall, serves fresh Maine lobster caught the day before in generous portions for a wallet-easy $14. Its fresh ingredients have kept this small spot on the foodie radar for months so I was eager to get a taste. Luke’s did...

I don’t often reblog on this site, but I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to pass on this site to you. Click the link above for the full list of twenty rules.

Kayak: Where can I go for $____? →
I recently discovered a great new aspect of Kayak. It was already my go-to site to investigate ticket prices when I already had my plans in mind, but now Kayak has turned itself in to a toy, a place to browse when I bout of wanderlust flares up.
With the “Where can I go for $___?” feature you can enter your starting airport (NYC for me) and then narrow by price, travel month/season,...

Food & Wine Classic at Aspen: Consumer Highlights
Sunday in Aspen is a time to reflect on the great weekend behind you and take a moment to look up at the great beauty all around you. This year I had the opportunity to recharge in Colorado for a few days, spend some time with family, and capture some of my better stories from the weekend. Above is a collage of some of my favorite pictures and below are some captions to match, from left to...

American Express Restaurant Trade Program - Day 2
Day two in Aspen brought more sun, slight hangovers, and more great panels at the trade program. Below is my recap of the day and top tips.

American Express Restaurant Trade Program - Day 1
While the Classic is the ultimate boondoggle of boondoggles for consumers, there are some truly great educational opportunities available for those in the trade through the American Express Restaurant Trade Program - celebrating its 21st year of programming. This year was no exception, with 4 strong panels on a range of key topics and the addition of trade only lunches each day. I’ll recap...

Food & Wine Classic at Aspen: Photos & Highlights
There is truly nothing like the Aspen Food & Wine Classic, which wrapped up this Sunday. As I begin what I am sure will be an extended detox period I am looking forward to sharing the highlights of my weekend with you here.
My three top learning experiences of the weekend include an opportunity to taste a corked wine, watch a full pig be butchered, and the American Express Trade Program...

Big Apple BBQ 2010
The Big Apple BBQwas this past weekend in Madison Square Park. This is consistently one of my favorite events in NYC, which also conveniently seems to fall on my birthday weekend each year making it like a party-in-a-box for me.
This year we kicked off with a stop at Baker’s Ribs to give the appropriate nod to my Texan heritage. Sadly the Saltlick crew had to call in injured after a...

Aspen Food & Wine Classic - Here I Come!
I am heading to the Aspen Food & Wine Festival today, which is sure to be a great time. I’ll be posting throughout as much as I can (mostly by Twitter), with a full recap at the end. In the meantime, here are a few of my favorite pictures from last year. They capture all of my favorite aspects about the event - great talent, wonderful food, and time in the beautiful Rocky mountains.

Young, Broke, and Cooking - Update
I’m sad to report that the Greenpoint Food Market has been temporarily shut down as the Health Department investigates concerns about proper permits for the vendors. As I mentioned in my previous post, this could mean the end of many of the locations as permits require that they prepare food in commercial kitchens - which cost upward of $250 for as little as 5 hours.
The market’s...

Beyond the Boardroom: Jon Tisch interviews Danny Meyer, CEO of Union Square Hospitality Group.
Meyer sits down with with Tisch for an enlightening 20 minute interview on his journey to be the entrepreneur he is today. They begin their discussion at Maialino as Meyer explains how he decided to become a restaurateur, opening Union Square Cafe at the tender age of 27 (For those of us in our 20s,...

Quality Ingredients = Simple Supper
It may not look like dinner, but a beautiful plate of caprese and prosciutto y melon truly hit the spot last night for a late summer evening meal. It was a great reminder of of how much joy can be found in preparing simple food, and how crucial quality ingredients are for those same simple meals. In this case I included fresh tomatoes from the Union Square Greenmarket, cantaloupe delivered by...

The Scoop iPhone App
I’m in love. At first I thought it would be just a fleeting affair, but after a week of playing with this new app constantly I think I could rename this summer “The Summer of The Scoop” because it seems destined to guide my lazy Saturday afternoons.
The Scoop is cleanly organized into 4 quadrants - Restaurants, Bars, Events, and Only in N.Y. Each section has focused, limited...

The three New York Cities
Below is a quote re-posted from Chris Dixon’sblog last week of a great E.B. White quote I had not encountered before. From my time in the city so far, I tend to agree with White on the “three NYCs” he describes. I fall solidly in to the third group of those here looking for something. While I have adjusted to much of New York life, I don’t think I could ever take its size...

Starting Your Culinary Business
The Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts are graciously offering 5 dates over the next year of a session on starting a culinary business, the first of which is today. While I can’t attend this week’s class, I’m putting it on my “to do” list for the fall. At $100 a person (for non FCI grads, which includes my non-culinary-skilled self) this could be the best spent money and...

Momofuku Ssam Bar
I did it. I officially crossed the line from distant David Chang fanboy, with a mere late night stop at Milk Bar under my belt, to actual consumer. I joined the crowds Saturday night and waited my turn for a seat at Ssam Bar. I was pleasantly surprised when the hostess ushered Scott and I back to Milk Bar to wait with a beer, as opposed to the classic NYC wait on the sidewalk. After an hour or so...
